Opening Ceremony and 2 games

Yesterday, we had the opening ceremony for baseball and a double header.

The opening ceremony was a complete waste of time. The kids stood on the field and did absolutely nothing. They did do the drawing for all of the raffle tickets. We didn’t win anything but a mom on our team one the 42″ TV, so that was kind of cool.

The PA system they have didn’t work. So they used the one in a police car, gotta love living in a small town.

But the boys mostly looked like this

Then they had two games 1 playing the Blacksox and another against the Braves. We did okay against the Blacksox and one but were stomped by the Braves. We didn’t even get to score. Last year, our team, the Rockets, dominated for the most part only losing one game all season. Now most of our team has aged out and moved on to coach pitch.

Part of the first game and the second game I worked it the dug out. It SUCKED!!! It was like dealing with Ethan on his worst day * 14 kids. I hope to never end up in there again.

2011 – 2012 School Year

I loved using Moving Beyond the Page this year and highly recommend it but Ethan didn’t like it very much, his main complaint being it wasn’t hard enough. So this year I sat down researched and have put together our own curriculum. I’m nervous just thinking about going it on my own.

For Ethan

Spelling -Soaring With Spelling Level 1

Grammar -Growing With Grammar Level 1

Handwriting -Handwriting Without Tears – ~~haven’t decided between 1st or 2nd grade level. My friend has both so I’m going to take a look before I purchase them.~~ Decided on 2nd grade

Art -Meet the Masters Track A Year 1

Math -~~Teaching Textbooks Math 3 (if Ethan can pass the placement test when it comes time to order everything) or~~ Mathematical Reasoning Level C I’m going to start with Mathematical reasoning level c and then move onto teaching textbooks when we finish

History -Story of the World Volume 1

Science - Classic Science Elementary Chemistry

Music – Children’s Music Journey

Some other things I plan on purchasing for the school year.

Literally literal

The other day during school Ethan and I were cutting out objects to finish the pattern on a worksheet. Most of the pictures had dotted line squares around them to show where to cut, the circles didn’t. So I said “Just cut the circles square” or something to that effect. Then continued on cutting out the pieces that I had. Then Ethan says “Oh, I literally cut the circle into a square” I turned and looked and yes he had in fact cut the circle into the shape of a square. I forget that I have to be careful with what I say because Ethan always goes for the literal meaning. On the other hand, I was very impressed to hear a 5 year old use literally in the correct context.

Today we will finish Concept 3 Unit 1 in Moving Beyond the Page. We had a rough go at rhyming words but true to form a nights sleep and he just gets it (I would love to get a glimpse into the way his mind works)We are about 1/3 of the way through Mathmatical Reasoning Level B and we are so much happier with it then with RightStart Math.

Why, yes, I’m lumping the whole month together because it felt like the whole month was like this.

I intended to start the second semester at the beginning of February, however we spent the first week and part of the second week covered in ice which means Daddy didn’t get to work. The week following that we all spent a lot of time with our heads in the toilet. We got the really nasty stomach virus that has sent so many to the hospital for dehydration. We were lucky and while it took its turn with all of us we survived it without a trip to the doctor’s office or hospital. After that I scrapped that and decided to wait until March.

American Girl

For Emerson’s birthday we did a girls lunch at American Girl. The food was scrumptious! I can’t wait to go back again and again. The girls had a blast and it was a nice way to spend the day.

We headed out early so that Emerson could do a little shopping. Craig and I decided ahead of time that we would let her get Bitty Baby, the doll she already had, some accessories or if she asked she could get a doll. She, of course, choose to get a new doll. She looked at all of the dolls twice and then decided on Rebecca. Until, she walked past Kit and her best friend and then she switched Rebecca out for both of them. Emerson’s Birthday

On Emerson’s birthday we opened presents, had some breakfast, and then went to see Tangled. After that, we came home played a little bit and waited for Grandma, Papa, and Matthew to come over for dinner. They brought with them a dollhouse for Emerson. She loves it and has played with it almost everyday.

I really neglected to blog about Emerson turning 3and I feel really bad about it so the next couple of posts will be about her.

I don’t know how my sweet little girl, my baby, is already 3. We made it through the 2s with little incident, so I guess it is only fair that the 3′s are hitting us hard. She has become defiant and outspoken, funny and artistic.

She loves to dress up and sing songs into her Hello Kitty microphone. She plays mommy to her baby dolls and wizards, Mario and Luigi, and guns with her brother. Just when I think she couldn’t be any girlier she runs through the room with a camoflouge hat on, a gun in her hand, or laughs at farts.

When Ethan and I sit down to work on school for the day she demands school work for herself. She loves to be read to and always wants to know what things say, even the signs on the highway.

She is entering her 3rd year of her love affair with Tinkerbell and has now also discovered Dora the Explorer.

She’s completely day time potty trained and doesn’t sleep in our room anymore. I guess you could say the kids are cosleeping or bedsharing now.

Yesterday, I turned 30 and oddly enough the day did not come with freak outs and panic like my 25th birthday did. I was calm, excited, and I feel very focused. I’m excited to see what this decade brings – like 2 teenagers, 10 year and 15 year wedding anniversaries, a second decade with the man that I love very much.

Well I homeschool so it would be really hard to forget them there. No, I haven’t left either of them at a store.

2. Where did you go on your very first date? (Like…first first, not first with your spouse or current significant other!)

First date, that was a long time ago and took awhile to remember, it was at the Dallas Morning News Dance Festival in 1997.

3. What’s your “silly” fear? (We’re not talking water and heights.)

Cheeseburger Casserole

I don’t have a picture but it was YUMMY!!

Brown the meat, I did a pound but next time I would do at least 1.5, drain, then put in a casserole dish and season to your liking

Next, I cut up 1 pickle and mixed that in. I only did one because Ethan doesn’t like pickles

Then mix together 3 eggs, 3/4 cup bisquick, and 1 1/2 cups milk then pour over the beef and pickles

Cook at 400 for 25 – 30 minutes cover the top with shredded cheese and then cook until cheese is melted

Last week Emerson moved up to her new class which means that she is all by herself and mommy gets to sit on the bleachers and that Ethan and Emerson are back on the same day same time for class which is NICE!! It also means that I get to take some pictures of the kids.

Emerson is the little girl in the purple. She refused to wear her leotard I think she wanted pants and a shirt so she cold be like the little girl she is standing directly behind. Emerson is really enamored with that little girl she follows her lead everywhere good or bad.

Blackened Fish Tacos

I was really excited about this recipe and then as I started pulling out the ingredients I started to get really worried. And by the time I started putting things together I was pretty sure that Ethan and Emerson weren’t going to like it and that Craig would eat it only because he was hungry. I was so wrong. Even after screwing up the coleslaw and then sort of redeeming it everyone liked it.

What you need

For slaw

2 tbsps cilantro (recipe called for fresh, I’m not that fancy I got the stuff out of my cabinet)

1 tablespoon lime juice

1/2 teaspoon N’Orleans Cajun Seasoning

1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil

1 clove of garlic (but once again I pulled mine out of the cabinet because I suck at pressing garlic)

1 teaspoon sugar

2 cups broccoli slaw mix (note the bag at the grocery store holds 5 cups don’t believe your husband if he says it looks like it’s about 2 cups, anyone want to guess what my mishap was??)

Fish

1 pound tilapia (I made two pounds, I was worried it was too much but the kids went back and ate just fish for seconds and there was hardly anything left at the end of the night)

avocado

8 corn tortillas

Weber N’Orleans Cajun seasoning

Garlic Salt

Ahead of time mix the broccoli slaw together and let stand in fridge

season fish

place in pan that has been heated to medium heat and sprayed with cooking spray

let it cook on one side for 8 to 10 minutes and then flip and cook on the other side until it is done cooking (it won’t take as long on the second side)

flake it apart and put inside the warm tortillas with chopped avocados and slaw

Fun to say, quick to make, and yummy to eat – a great blend of crunchy, salty, and sweet.

What you need- cookie sheet, wax paper, pretzels, hugs, and m&ms

About the pretzels, you’re supposed to get something called waffle pretzels??? I had never heard of them and didn’t see them so I got the normal little ones.

They were obviously a little bigger then the waffle ones so I put 2 Hugs on each pretzel. My cookie sheet held 35 pretzels so it took almost a whole bag of hugs to cover them all.

Preheat oven to 200 and put them in there for 5 – 10 minutes. The directions said 10 minutes but I never left them in that long, I think the longest they were in was like 7 minutes.

Here is a pic of them all ready to go in the oven.

After they get out of the oven plop a m&m down on top of them to sort of flatten them out.

Oh, and you’ll want to put down wax paper, trust me.

Egg Geodes Take 2

Ethan had been asking to make some more egg geodes for awhile. The eggs were ready to go and sitting on the counter for at least a month and in true procrastinator fashion I didn’t find time to do them until Christmas Eve Eve when I was supposed to be baking and cleaning. I’m not sure what happened maybe it was the fact that the eggs while cleaned had been sitting around for at least a month or if it is because this time I set the eggs in wax paper but it was almost a complete flop. Bummer, so that means that there will be an egg geodes take 3. After that I don’t think we’ll do it again… ever… because it’s a pain in the butt to clean the eggs out.

I got the recipe for this cupcake from Kevin and Amanda. It was delicious. We had it for our family Christmas dinner out at Cheryl’s house. For some reason, the cupcakes all fell in the middle but I fixed it by adding extra mousse to them to puff them back up. Also, when making the icing I had to add milk, not sure how much but prior to adding the milk it was a chocolate rock. If you click on the link you can make these cupcakes too!!

Christmas

Christmas was a little different for us this year, my cousin was playing in a soccer tournament and her family had to leave town on Christmas day. So this year instead of gathering at my grandmother’s house for Christmas dinner we got together for dinner on Christmas Eve. I really enjoyed getting together on Christmas Eve it was nice to not be beaten down by the long day that Christmas always turns out to be. It was a little rough trying to get the kids to go to sleep. Emerson fell asleep easily enough but was still up until almost 11, Ethan was much harder to get to sleep and I think he gave in somewhere around 1 or 2.

The next morning all of the adults were up before the kids. I was up by 7 and was able to make breakfast and get everything ready for my parents and brother’s arrival at 9:30. Minutes before they got to the house Emerson woke up and happily pronounced “It’s my birthday” Poor thing she is very excited about her upcoming birthday, lol. Around 10ish I finally decided Ethan had slept enough we had eaten breakfast and were ready to get the show on the road. Santa brought Emerson a Tinkerbell guitar and a microphone on a stand and Ethan got a black DSi just like he had been wanting for the last 2 years.

In the evening when headed to my parent’s house where we entered into a very serious minute to win it competition. The winners got a lotto ticket. It was fun but we had to cut the evening short to get Ethan and Emerson home.

Sunday morning was very interesting and is a whole nother blog entry. In the afternoon we headed to Cheryl and Keith’s house to exchange presents amongst our family.

It was the best Christmas we have had so far. The kids were both excited and into it, they have played with and loved every toy.

All of the Christmas decorations are now packed back up and ready to be set back in the corner of the garage. The presents have been moved to the kids rooms and some have been put up but most are still strewn about the rooms being played with and well loved.

2011 E Book Challenge

I never thought I’d be much of an e book reader but then I had kids and discovered that kids steal bookmarks, like to pretend to read books themselves, spill things, rip things, and on and on. All of a sudden I understood the appeal of the ereader. I don’t actually own an ereader but I have an Ipod touch with the kindle app, barnes and noble app, ibook, and stanza installed on it.

I’ve already finished two books.

Rearranged Emerson’s room

Last week, we I worked hard to rearrange Emerson’s room and got some of her baby toys moved out.

I did all of that so that

she could lay in her bed in her room for about 2 hours before deciding she wasn’t quite ready to be done cosleeping. Which is fine with me. We have moved her whole bed in there now and she has asked to sleep in there a couple of times but I have found that that means that she wants to lay there for about 10 minutes and get up and then around midnight when I’m dying to go to bed she decides to go lay down with us. I suspect she’ll move out for good at some point during her 3rd year just like her brother did. I’m not sure what I’ll do with all that extra room in our bed.

Superbowl – Broncos take the win

Well our boys finished the season undefeated. The season was rough and I’m glad it’s over but I also miss it just a little bit. I think Ethan will be playing again next season, which a couple of weeks before the end of the season he definitely wasn’t going to play. I’m not sure why or what changed his mind.

I took lots of pictures, over 600, so I’m going to try and post just a few of my favorites.

Ethan got to have a first

Ethan had his first sleep over this weekend. His best buddy Lucas came over and spent the night Friday. I was on pens and needles all day. I was nervous and Ethan and Emerson were nothing but excited. He couldn’t wait for his friend to get there. They played for a bit and then around 11:30 I got them settled down for a movie. I was hoping that the movie would keep them still enough to fall asleep but that didn’t really happen. Around 12:30 I got Emerson to sleep with Craig and set in for the long haul with the kiddos. They almost outlasted me but were finally out around 2.

But, I guess that is what sleep overs are all about talking and giggling late into the night. They were up by 9:30 the next morning and played and played.

Since football is over Ethan finally got to move up and the best part of all – he gets to be in Coach Tommy’s class. He has wanted to be in Tommy’s class since he started at ASI in August 09. For the longest time he blamed me for not letting him be in his class, in actuality he wasn’t old enough yet. He had to be 5. When Ethan turned 5 and moved to bronze he was a little disappointed because it turned out that Tommy didn’t teach them.

After class, Tommy told me that Ethan will probably move up quickly again. He would have been in Bronze for 1 month but because of football season he had to wait 3 months. I’m interested to see how long Ethan stays in this level and what happens after Gold.

Marathon Kids is a really cool program that is offered to kids in kindergarten – 5th grade for completely FREE!! Ethan’s favorite thing to do in this world is run. He wants to run long and fast and forever. I love that about him!

The goal is for each child to run the length of a marathon, 26.2 miles over a period of about 6 months. Many schools from the surrounding school districts and homeschool children participate. One of the emails said that they expected 50.000 children to show up. Thankfully there was only a fraction of that or we never would have made it in and out of the stadium in a reasonable amount of time.

I’m not sure who the MC was but she was very bubbly and I thought she was a hoot. She was a teacher at one of the schools, I think, and that school has got to be lucky to have a teacher who cares as much as she does.

The kids do most of it on their own but part of the first mile and part of the last mile are run at Loos Stadium in Addison. Ethan’s first run was the Saturday before Halloween and he was really excited.

He got to wear his Luigi costume which made it a little extra special and then to top things off we ran into some of our homeschooling friends.

This is Ethan after finishing the 1/4 to 1/2 mile run. He ran the whole way and was ready to go again.

BTW, this is the day that Emerson got called a boy FOUR times.
